RIM Molding to encapsulate wire harnesses with polyurethane (PUR) is a new technology that has been embraced by the wire harness industry. This is a reaction of two chemicals mixed by impingement and introduced into a mold cavity. Since the chemicals are in a fluid state, they completely coat and adhere to each of the wires for 100% encapsulation. As the chemicals react in the mold, they become a solid but flexible elastomer.

Wire harness often referred to as a cable harness or wiring assembly used to keep numerous wires or cables organized. In fact, cable and wiring harnesses can be customized to meet almost any specification. Wire harnesses are critical for saving valuable space within automobiles within the dashboard, under the hood, and more. They are also important for organizing complex wiring in such a way that technicians can easily identify their purpose.

The properties important for polyurethane use in an engine compartment environment for wiring applications include flexibility at low temperatures, high elongation, chemical resistance, a fluid shedding skin, adhesion to the encapsulated materials, and physical & chemical stability.

Wire harness manufacturing started in 1989 for special automobiles in Europe. Since automotive parts are regularly exposed to extreme temperatures, chemical solvents, moisture, and abrasive interactions, cables and wires must be manufactured to standard. Polyurethane (PU) cable assemblies are chosen where good resistance to weathering, aging and ozone is required. Polyurethane is also excellent for abrasion as the material has a high tensile strength.

Furthermore, benefits of polyurethane wire harnesses are:

  • Decreases cost compared to multiple individual assemblies
  • Decreases installation time for projects involving extensive networks of wiring or cabling
  • Enhances safety by minimizing the risk of shorts or electrical fires
  • Creates a 100% watertight and airtight seal

Advantages of polyurethane in production of wire harnesses

  • Flexible at low temperatures
  • Good strength and hardness
  • Great chemical and abrasion resistance
  • Suitable physical and mechanical properties
  • Low electronically conductivity
  • Non-water permeability
