Prepolymers
Specialty products
Polyurethane products can be produced in a single-stage process or by mixing with prepolymers (or via polymerization). Prepolymers are intermediate products in a liquid form between monomers and the final polymer. These materials are created by adding an excess amount of either polyol or isocyanate, resulting in a final product that remains liquid, with a significant amount of unreacted active functional groups (NCO or OH) present.
The use of prepolymers offers several advantages; by mixing some of the components under carefully controlled conditions, better control over the reactions or side reactions (by-products) is achieved. Additionally, the mechanical and thermal properties of the final products can be determined and finely tuned with these materials. Thus, prepolymers are used in the production of innovative products and a wide range of technical parts, including high-performance coatings, paints, structural decorative tools, household items, and sports equipment.
